Ribbon Microphone Repair

Ribbon microphone repair, replacement handmade ribbons installed. 1.8 or 2.5 micron aluminium ribbon used, results sometimes better than original. Many clients from Radio NZ to respected audio engineers and studios throughout New Zealand, Even one job assembling a new motor into an R-84 for AEA to save shipping it all the way there and back,  vetted by none other than Wes Dooley on the phone.  I had quite an association with Bob Crowley from Crowley and Tripp ribbon mics throughout the years as he was setting up and manufacturing. I have serviced many ribbon microphones from the big RCA’s to chinese ribbon mics plus Coles 4038.  Your choice with a Coles is to send the mic back to Coles and have it re ribboned with an original ribbon or I will hand make a suitable replacement. Coles use a particularly thin ribbon, .6 micron. I have special foil I use just for these. Cost is anywhere between  $80 and $250 plus gst however RCA BK5’s and 77s have a very narrow ribbon. and great care has to be taken to fit properly, these may cost more.  Transformers can be upgraded too, though I don’t keep them in stock. Contact me on contact page if I can be of service. My speciality is ribbon microphones but I also service condenser/capacitor microphones and the odd dynamic.

Capacitor Microphone Repair

Most issues with capacitor mics are caused by humidity and dirty capsules. The symptoms can be intermittent, fading away when singing or talking close to the mic usually means a dirty capsule picking up the humidity from vocal input. The mic returns to a working condition then does it again on the next attempt. Or the mic simply dies altogether. Sometimes leaving it in a warm spot for a while can bring it back but likely it will succumb again before too long. Crackling is also down to a dirty capsule.   Some mics can be stubborn with this fault.  I clean capsules with a very fine brush and if I have to, distilled water.
